Mattias Almljung, consultant at Altran provides periodic news and trends in the area of ASIC/FPGA.

We have long assumed that programmable logic is synonymous with powerful and expensive components. This is not necessarily an absolute truth anymore. We are in the middle of a revolutionary change of the FPGA's where today's manufacturing processes opens doors to both more powerfull and more complete systems on a single FPGA, but also for smaller, more efficient and, above all cheaper FPGA's. This means that we can expect to find them in everything from small battery-powered consumer products to complex system solutions on a single chip.
